This Melaka Brand Is Proving Local Streetwear Can Go Global

Some brands sell clothes. Others sell identity. Akudesign chose the second path.

In the heart of Melaka, where culture, colour and history collide, one homegrown streetwear label has been quietly building something bigger than fashion. It’s called Akudesign  and for years, it has turned local pride into something people can wear.

Started in 2009 by founder Kasu and his brother, the brand wasn’t born in a fancy studio or backed by investors. It started with passion, instinct, and two young dreamers who simply loved streetwear culture.

At the time, Kasu was deep into skateboarding, inspired by global brands and creative energy. Instead of only supporting overseas labels, he asked a bold question:

Why not build our own?

That one decision changed everything.

A Name That Sparks Conversation

Akudesign doesn’t sound corporate. That’s exactly the point.

“Aku” means “I” in Malay, making the name playful, personal, and unforgettable. When someone asks, “Who designed that shirt?” the answer becomes the brand itself.

Akudesign.

Simple. Smart. Local. Memorable.

In a market where many brands chase foreign-sounding names, Akudesign leaned into language, identity, and originality long before it became trendy.

Built From Zero, Powered By Grit

Kasu didn’t come from a business family. His parents were teachers. He openly admits he started with zero knowledge  even basic profit calculations were a learning curve.

But that didn’t stop him.

While studying Quantity Surveying at university, he continued selling shirts, joining events, networking, and growing the brand from campus life to city streets.

From Kuala Lumpur to Johor to Melaka, every move became market research. Every connection became momentum.

More Than Streetwear  It’s Melaka in Fabric Form

Today, Akudesign’s physical store sits near the iconic red buildings of Melaka, surrounded by tourists, stories, and movement.

But this isn’t just a T-shirt shop.

The brand blends streetwear with local culture, often weaving Melaka-inspired elements into its designs. That means every purchase becomes more than apparel; it becomes memory, identity, and a wearable souvenir with meaning.

Tourists from Japan, Germany, China and beyond have stepped into the store looking for something authentic.

They found it.

The Real Struggle of Local Brands

Like many Malaysian businesses, Akudesign has faced outdated mindsets.

Some still believe local brands should be cheap. Others assume imported means better quality.

Kasu has spent years challenging that narrative, educating customers on craftsmanship, fabric quality, design value, and the story behind each piece.

Because local doesn’t mean less.

Local can mean legendary.

Streetwear With Soul

Akudesign’s tagline says it all:

Wear With Pride.

That message came from Kasu’s own experience wearing brands that made him feel confident, seen, and proud. He wanted Malaysians to feel that same energy in a homegrown label.

And now, many do.

This is what modern Malaysian entrepreneurship looks like: culture-driven, fearless, creative, and rooted in identity.

Final Word

Akudesign proves you don’t need to come from money, fashion schools, or major cities to build something powerful.

Sometimes all you need is vision, consistency, and the courage to put your own name on the dream.

Melaka made the story.

Akudesign is wearing it out loud.
