DBKL Urged To Expand Bangsar Development Study Citywide
Kuala Lumpur residents and sustainable development advocates are urging Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) to expand its six-month development capacity study in Bangsar into a citywide assessment.
The Kuala Lumpur Residents Action for Sustainable Development Association (KLRA+SD) said development intensity should be based not only on individual project approvals but also on whether surrounding infrastructure can support additional growth.
The group highlighted concerns over pressure on roads, drainage systems, utilities, public transport, open spaces and community facilities as Kuala Lumpur continues to experience rapid redevelopment.
KLRA+SD welcomed DBKL’s plan to study the cumulative impact of existing, approved and future developments in Bangsar, saying the approach could provide a stronger basis for managing future development.
The association has proposed applying the same methodology to other high-pressure areas before eventually covering the entire capital.
It also called for greater transparency, including public access to the study’s methodology and key findings, as well as opportunities for residents and stakeholders to provide feedback.
KLRA+SD said the assessment should ultimately help DBKL determine where development can take place, how much additional density an area can accommodate and what infrastructure should be provided before further intensification.
The association stressed that carrying-capacity assessments should support sustainable growth rather than prevent development, helping Kuala Lumpur balance continued expansion with the needs of existing communities.
