The Woman Challenging Malaysia’s Exam Obsessed Education System

She was supposed to become a lawyer.

That was the plan.
A law degree from the prestigious International Islamic University Malaysia.
A clear career path. A respectable title.

But Azura had a different calling.

Not the courtroom.
The classroom.

And that single decision would eventually grow into Primarily, a bold education brand quietly reshaping how Malaysians learn English.

When Passion Refuses to Stay Quiet

Azura didn’t wait for permission to start teaching.

Even while studying law at university, she spent her free time tutoring students. Teaching wasn’t just a side hustle. It was something deeper a calling she couldn’t ignore.

She once dreamed of studying TESOL. Life, however, had other plans.

So she studied law.

But the passion to teach never left.

“Even after graduating, I realised something,” she recalls.
“I didn’t want to practise law. I wanted to build something that helps people learn.”

And so in 2010, fresh out of university and armed with little more than belief, she launched a small education centre called Pusat Tuisyen Prima.

No big investors.
No massive marketing.

Just conviction.

The Struggle No One Talks About

Starting young sounds inspiring on paper.

Reality? It was brutal.

The early years were filled with doubt not just from outsiders, but even from people closest to her.

Friends questioned the decision.

Family members wondered why a law graduate would run a tuition centre instead of becoming a lawyer.

There were months where breaking even felt like a miracle.

But the hardest moment came from somewhere unexpected.

Two years after graduation, when Azura’s mother met friends who asked about her daughter’s career, she avoided mentioning the business.

Instead, she simply said:

“She just graduated.”

For Azura, that moment stung.

But it also fueled something powerful.

She was determined to prove that following passion wasn’t a mistake.

From Tuition Centre to Education Movement

Then came 2020.

COVID hit. Schools shut down. And Malaysia’s education system began shifting.

Major exams like UPSR and PT3 were abolished.

For Azura and her team, this wasn’t just disruption.

It was a turning point.

Instead of clinging to the traditional tuition model, they made a bold decision:

Rebrand. Reinvent. Restart.

Pusat Tuisyen Prima evolved into Primarily an education platform focused not on exams, but on real-world communication skills.

Because Azura had noticed a troubling pattern.

Many students could pass English exams.

But they couldn’t speak the language confidently.

“We realised English was being treated as a subject,” she says.
“Not as a communication skill.”

Primarily set out to change that.

Learning That Feels Like Life

Walk into a Primarily classroom and you’ll notice something unusual.

Students aren’t sitting silently copying notes.

They’re moving.

Talking.

Acting.

Sometimes even shopping.

Yes shopping.

When students learn about money in math lessons, teachers might take them to a supermarket to apply the concept in real life.

Lessons are 80% activity based.

Role plays. Real-world simulations. Interactive learning.

The goal is simple:

Make learning feel like life.

Not a lecture.

Meet The Partner Who Joined The Mission

Every powerful mission eventually attracts the right people.

Primarily, that person was Aisha.

Their meeting wasn’t planned.

Aisha was working in the oil and gas industry when a colleague mentioned an education program looking for facilitators.

She was curious.

So she hopped on her scooter and rode to Azura’s house for a discussion.

That visit changed everything.

What started as a small facilitation role soon became a long-term journey.

Years later, Aisha became Azura’s partner in building Primarily.

Together, they turned a small education centre into a growing learning ecosystem.

What Primarily Does Today

Primarily now focuses on skills that matter beyond exams.

Their programmes include:

  • English Communication Classes for children, teenagers and adults
  • Phonics & Reading Programmes for kids aged 4 and above
  • Activity based Math Learning
  • Public Speaking and Communication Training
  • SPM Leaver Preparation for scholarship interviews and university presentations

But their mission goes even further.

Primarily also runs the Primary English Olympiad — a national-level competition designed to inspire students to explore English beyond textbooks.

The competition includes:

  • Spelling challenges
  •  Grammar mastery
  • Vocabulary tests
  • Communication skills

And the vision?

To reach 10,000 students nationwide.

Education For Everyone Not Just The Privileged

Primarily also works closely with organisations to bring education to underserved communities.

Through collaborations with institutions and CSR initiatives, the team runs English and Math programmes for B40 communities.

One of their projects supports students through a programme organised by the International Institute of Islamic Finance and Banking.

For Azura and Aisha, success isn’t just about enrolments.

It’s about impact.

The Bigger Vision

Over the next five years, Primarily isn’t chasing dozens of physical branches.

Their vision is bigger.

They want to build a complete ecosystem for English communication.

That includes:

  • National competitions
    • Public speaking platforms
    • English-speaking clubs for adults
    • Digital learning platforms
    • Collaborations with brands beyond education

Yes, even fashion brands and lifestyle companies.

Because language is more than a school subject.

It’s a life skill.

The Message Behind The Mission

Today, Azura’s mother proudly tells people about her daughter’s work.

The same business once hidden in conversations has now become a story worth celebrating.

And for Azura, that’s the real victory.

Not the revenue.

Not the recognition.

But the impact.

Because sometimes the boldest move you can make is ignoring the career everyone expects  and building the one you believe in.

And in Azura’s case, that belief is helping thousands of Malaysians find their voice.

Follow the journey.
Because this is only the beginning for Primarily.
