What’s New With the Malaysian Passport

KUALA LUMPUR The Malaysian passport is getting a fresh new look and enhanced security to safeguard against counterfeiting and protect national identity integrity.
According to The Straits Times, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail shared details during a ministerial briefing held on January 8 at Dewan De’ Seri Endon, Puspanitapuri. The minister outlined the upgraded design and advanced security features that will be integrated into upcoming issue passports.
The rollout will happen in phases, aligned with the regular passport renewal schedule. Passport holders are advised not to rush for the updated version immediately, but instead to apply when their current passport is due for renewal. All existing passports along with MyKad will remain valid until their respective expiration dates.
What Is MyKad?
MyKad (Kad Pengenalan Malaysia) is Malaysia’s national smart identity card issued to citizens aged 12 and above. Far more than a simple ID card, MyKad functions as a versatile digital document used in everyday life.
Embedded with a microchip, MyKad securely stores biometric data and multiple personal records. This includes driver’s license details, banking and payment functions, health information (such as blood type and allergies), and digital signatures. It plays a central role in government services and routine transactions throughout Malaysia.
