Earthquake Rocks Parts Of The Philippines, But Malaysia Remains Safe From Tsunami Threat

A sudden shake. A moment of uncertainty. And thousands of people across the Philippines instantly felt the earth move beneath them.

Late Friday night, a powerful 5.3-magnitude earthquake rattled parts of the Philippines’ Bicol Region, sending residents rushing to assess the situation as tremors swept across multiple provinces.

The quake struck at approximately 9.57pm on June 5, with the epicentre located around 15 kilometres south of Santo Domingo in Albay province. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the earthquake occurred at a relatively shallow depth of just 9 kilometres, making the shaking more noticeable across surrounding communities.

For many residents, it was a stark reminder of the Philippines’ position along the Pacific Ring of Fire — one of the most seismically active zones on the planet.

The strongest shaking was reported in Santo Domingo and Legazpi City, where Intensity V levels were recorded. Nearby areas including Tabaco, Ligao and Malilipot also experienced significant tremors, while parts of Sorsogon felt Intensity IV shaking.

Seismic instruments detected even stronger ground movement in certain locations. Tabaco City registered Intensity VI readings, while Castilla in Sorsogon recorded Intensity V, highlighting the earthquake’s widespread impact across the region.

The tremors extended well beyond Albay, reaching parts of Camarines Sur, Masbate and Camarines Norte. While the intensity weakened further from the epicentre, the earthquake was still felt across a broad stretch of the country.

Authorities are continuing damage assessments and have warned residents to remain alert for possible aftershocks, which commonly follow earthquakes of this magnitude.

Despite concerns that often accompany seismic activity in the region, there is reassuring news for Malaysians.

Officials have confirmed that the earthquake poses no tsunami threat to Malaysia, and no tsunami warnings have been issued following the event.

As monitoring efforts continue, the focus now shifts to ensuring community safety and evaluating any potential structural damage in affected areas.

Natural disasters often arrive without warning. But they also remind us of the resilience of communities, the importance of preparedness, and the strength people show when facing uncertainty together.

For now, Malaysia remains safe, while authorities in the Philippines continue to closely monitor the situation.
